I’m sure, at some time, we’ve all found ourselves lying in bed unable to sleep, thoughts and worries churning through our minds in the small hours of the night. King David was in a similar situation but he tackled it differently. Instead of lying there worrying, he chose to think about his God instead.
He took his focus off all his concerns and thought if I’m going to lie awake anyway, I’d be better off thinking about how good God is and how His love has never failed me yet, nor ever will. He reminds himself how God has always been there to help him and he’s very aware that the Lord is so close His shadow is actually covering him. What a lovely thought because we can say the same.π
As he lies there he talks to the Lord, and even sings to Him because he has a deep down joy knowing God’s hand is holding him, making him feel wonderfully safe and secure. He knew who to cling to.
David had learned a lot of wisdom and we’d probably do well to follow his example. Instead of dwelling on the multitude of things that he could be worrying about, he chose to dwell on three things that encouraged him - God helps me, God protects me and God holds me securely.
Now the next time we find ourselves just lying there tossing and turning in the night, let’s do the David thing and think about our loving God and how He’s right there with us, just waiting for us to cast all those cares over on to Him, knowing He’s more than able to look after us and sort it all out while He holds us safe. Amen.
Psalm 63:3 Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you!
